About the Author
Judy Martin is a painter and teacher also known as the author of a number of practical art books. She lives and works in Brighton, on England's south coast, and exhibits in her home studio every year for the Artist's Open Houses during Brighton Festival. She studied painting and printmaking at Maidstone College of Art and went on to a two-year postgraduate degree at Reading University. She was a freelance writer and editor for a period of fifteen years, and has subsequently worked in adult education and at a mental health day centre, facilitating groups in art craft and ceramic work.

Wonderful book. A cornucopia of multiple ideas for how to utilize all types of pastels in myriad ways. Extreme value for the price. Beginners can gain from this book, however if you already have the basics of art fundamentals and are a working artist looking to either begin in pastel, or are looking for ways to change up the basics, this book is invaluable. With each different technique, the author gives multiple suggestions on how to utilize the technique in different ways. Can't say enough good things about this book-total bang for the buck
I have purchased many books and videos over the year, all proclaiming to give step-by-step instruction and guidance on becoming a pastel artists. By far, this is the best purchase I have made. It does describe each of the techniques and then shows you the technique, even giving you ideas of how to practice it. For anyone interested in learning pastel techniques, this is the first book you should buy.
A bit older text, but still useable information. Learned about several types of pastels that I haven't seen on the local market or even on line. Great book. I would recommend this one for a beginning pastelist. I think more experienced pastelist would find this info. a little dated.
The section on technique is quite good and helpful, but this comprises only about 60 pages of the 190-page book. The bulk of the book is on Themes (e.g. portraits, landscapes, animals, etc.) and this section doesn't offer much more than some pretty pictures and a few comments about each theme.
This book is okay, but I wish that it had been more informative. For example: I was surprised that in the blending technique section it didn't mention blending with Turpenoid. That is one of the best ways to block in colors and blend.
I find this very helpful in supporting what I learn in class, allowing me to work independently at home.
Lots of picture illustrations and good information
The book is all that the title suggests: a compendium of techniques using the medium of soft pastels. There is also plenty in this book for the oil painter, watercolorist, etc., as there are many principles which appeal to all artists. No nonsense, plainly written, well-organized book.
