“The Divine Hours is simply the best book for people who want to work prayer into the fabric of their daily life.” —Bert Ghezzi, author of Voices of the Saints“A welcome remedy for the increasing number of lay Christians who have rediscovered the daily offices . . . Tickle puts each day’s prayers, psalms, readings, and refrains—everything you need—in one place . . . The rhythm that Tickle’s book establishes gives one a stronger sense of participating in an ancient, worldwide but very personal liturgy.”—Nora Gallagher, beliefnet.com and author of Things Seen and Unseen: A Year Lived in Faith

From the Inside Flap
"A welcome remedy for the increasing number of lay Christians who have rediscovered the daily offices. Tickle puts each day's prayers, psalms, readings, and refrains-everything you need-in one place. The rhythm that Tickle's book establishes gives one a stronger sense of participating in an ancient, worldwide but very personal liturgy."-Nora Gallagher, "beliefnet.com, and author of "Things Seen and Unseen: A Year Lived in Faith The third and final volume in a trilogy of prayer manuals compiled by "Publishers Weekly religion editor Phyllis Tickle as a contemporary Book of Hours to guide Christians gently yet authoritatively through the daily offices. "The Divine Hours is the first major literary and liturgical reworking of the sixth-century Benedictine Rule of fixed-hour prayer. This beautifully conceived and thoroughly modern three-volume guide will appeal to the theological novice as well as to the ecclesiastical sophisticate. Making primary use of the Book of Common Prayer and the writings of the Church Fathers, "The Divine Hours is also a companion to the New Jerusalem Bible, from which it draws its Scripture readings. The trilogy blends prayer and praise in a way that, while extraordinarily fresh, respects and builds upon the ancient wisdom of Christianity. The third and final book in the set, "Prayers for Springtime, provides prayers, psalms, and readings for this season associated with rebirth. Compact, with deluxe endpapers, it is perfect for those seeking greater spiritual depth. As a contemporary Book of Hours, "The Divine Hours: Prayers for Springtime heralds a renewal of the tradition of disciplined daily prayer, and gives those already using the first twovolumes the completion they are seeking. With this volume, the series culminates with three prayer manuals encompassing the liturgical and calendar year with the offices for every day. "From the Hardcover edition.

I come from a church tradition where extemporaneous prayer is very highly valued. It tends to be seen as being more sincere and reflective of a life lived in close proximity to God. "If God is my Father and Jesus is my Friend, then why would I ever need to read a prayer? I can talk to Him like I am talking to you!" would be the types of comment one might hear. Absolutely, I would agree with those comments, but at the same time, a prayer life that is rooted only in God, the self and the moment, can lead to a very internalized and narcissistic type of prayer, where the focus of prayer is not God, but me, my needs, and the needs that I perceive around me. Prayer can become a laundry list of my own grievances, and a litany of my own well used familiar phrases - Just, Really, Father-god.....Phyllis Tickle in her series of Prayer manuals goes a long way to helping people rooted in extemporaneous prayer to move gently towards a more liturgical, and indeed biblical model of prayer. She has taken the ancient practice of fixed hour prayer and made it accessible for anyone who desires to move beyond the blandness and mundanity of their prayer life into something a little more challenging and stretching. Each day the prayers are redolent with the words of the Old and New Testament. Other prayers have rich and deep biblical themes. Scattered throughout are various readings from other traditional sources, which help to connect those using these prayers to other voices in the wider, and historic church. The book begins by introducing the reader to the history and development of fixed hour prayer, and guides him/her in the best use of the book. The section of chanting the Psalms gets a little confusing. Attempting it alone is a little awkward. To learn more about Chanting the Psalms I would point you to Hal Hobson's settings of the Psalms The Psalter: Psalms and Canticles for Singing, Choral EditionFor those who have never considered liturgical prayer, for whatever reason, I would encourage them to take the time to at least look at this book, as it is sure to move them beyond themselves and into a deeper life of prayer.
Phyllis Tickle's fantastic Divine Hours work is a perfect fit for Kindle as it enables you to carry the otherwise quite large prayer book with you wherever you go, even on your phone, thus allowing fixed hour prayer to be practiced as intended. Now we just need the rest of the year in Kindle format so we don't lose those advantages for the other two thirds of the year!
I have mixed feelings about this book. We're new to the Anglican Church, and I wanted to try the fixed-hour prayers, but I didn't really understand how this worked because I was still confused about the Book of Common Prayer. This book worked very well for that purpose. I got a good feel for the rhythm of fixed-hour prayer. However, there are also some negatives for me which will prevent me from buying the other volumes. First, my favorite parts of this book are the parts that come directly from the BCP, which makes this one unnecessary now that I understand how the devotions in the BCP work, especially since I usually did not enjoy the additions such as the hymns. Second, she has many short sections of Psalms in each prayer instead of one longer section, which tends to make it feel choppy and disruptive as I'm trying to pray. For instance, I just counted, and one section has 11 different pieces to pray for the Vesper Office. Again, it's not the amount but the choppiness that bothered me. And third, although longer sections of the Psalms are included each day, they do not seem to follow the daily office lectionary, though it's hard to tell since the Kindle version doesn't include the dates; I can't tell if the Psalms are systematically read or not.In the end, I prefer using the daily devotions, weekly collect, and Bible reading from the BCP rather than The Divine Hours. I didn't even make it all the way through this book. However, it might be just the thing for those who want a hymn added, who aren't concerned about the Psalms matching the daily office lectionary, and who don't mind the choppiness of multiple short readings.
Let's be clear. I LOVE The Divine Hours and have bought multiple copies. I believe I even purchased this Kindle volume once before. I had hoped that the publisher and Amazon would have corrected the huge flaw -- as at least one other reader noted in 2011 -- that the days of the week and weeks of the month are not listed on the individual pages of the book. As one switches to nightly Compline it is very hard to find ones place for the next day. Other volumes have been fixed. This is just sloppy on the part of the publisher.
Finally purchased the electronic version of this book. I have read horrible reviews of the formatting, but purchased it anyway and was delighted. It is a lot easier to navigate than the paper version and I almost never lose my place going through the prayers. I do miss the coloring of the book but this works very well. Good buy.
I purchased the Kindle version of Phyllis Tickle's great treatise but the formatting had a problem. The dates for the reading were missing. It makes it very difficult to navigate, especially if you miss a day of reading. The Table of Contents has entries for June, for July and for August, but no dates, such as July 19. I started making bookmarks for every day, but that was cumbersome and time consuming. I asked a friend if his Kindle version was similar and he said his includes the dates. I am not sure if I got a bad product or if this particular version is defective. I'd like a refund.
I love this series of books (5 stars for that). There is no navigation aids in the Kindle edition (the stuff in the margins of the paper-book form that tells you what day's reading you are on) which makes it virtually unusable if you don't take the time to put in a ton bookmarks. I feel it's a strong enough book to be worth the time spent making it workable.
