I love this! I speak French and my husband speaks English at home. This is the perfect book to read to our baby girl because we can both just read our respective language. Its well done in French, too, unlike a lot of translated books. Love it and love Dr. Seuss!
We have a bilingual home because I'm American and Hubby is from France. Important note, I don't speak cohesive French at all. At our house, we love Dr. Seuss. I introduced Dr. Seuss to Hubby when we starting collecting books for our baby, and he fell in LOVE with them. And Hubby is very very VERY good about reading (not just speaking) to our little kiddo in French, but Dr. Seuss was like IMPOSSIBLE to translate on his own because of the made up words and the specific rhyming patterns. Enter in Cat in the Hat in English and French: it was perfect! This is actually what I got Hubby for Christmas and he loves it. He did say some of the words are changed to make it work, so it varies slightly from the original English story... BUT he thought it was well done and the overall theme is the same. Done well enough that we actually got copies to give to our niece and nephew in France to share what we love with them. I love that it has both English and French text on the same page: makes a great reference for putting together the vocabulary and comparing the languages next to each other, and it is only one copy of the book. I have 2 Hortons, 2 grinches, etc because of the desire to have both languages in our home; So that fact that it is one book with both languages is a HUGE plus for me! Other great thing is it is all original art work, no variance there. So 5 stars from our family!
I'm not sure why some people have complained about the translation. It notes on the book itself that it is a speaking language translation instead of word for word. I am fluent in French, and I am using this to teach my small children.
I gave this as a gift for one of my students who was moving to Canada. It was a favorite of hers here, and I hoped she'd enjoy reading it in French, too. Nice quality book--and a classic, no matter what language!
Any translation of literature, especially the genius of Dr. Seuss, would be difficult. And the translator has ti decide on the priority of objectives to achieve. This translation doesn't create any of the rhythmic charm of the original. The translation of the plot is so out of sequence with the English, that it is useless to allow children to connect the English words to the French, even if a sequential translation would have lost most of the charm, it would have been educational. Also, the French translation seems to be several grade levels more advanced than the English, which makes the target audience different than the age at which these books are introduced to English speaking children.
Our 8 year old is taking French and loved this book. It has both the English version and French.
I loved it. I am trying to re-learn French, having take it through grade and high shook MANY years ago. I was able to find a video on YouTube of someone reading this book, so I followed along. Perfect!
What a great to help children learn to read... in 2 languages!!! My grandson adores his new Dr. Seuss books!!
