I use with book in conjunction with the SNP maps of hiking trails and waterfalls,and do use the Gazetteer that is referenced.Directions and trail description are right on, more informativethan what the park service gives you.I have hiked many of the Waterfalls referenced, and would neverhave found some without this Book & Gazetteer.(outside of parks)I have purchased other books about Waterfalls in VA, and thisis by far the best.Note-to-self (and others): I just hiked the Rose River Fallsloop that includes the Dark Hollow Falls, in SNP, this pastweekend, 1) "all trailheads that start on SkyLine Drive go downhill",that means hiking back UP 2) Recommend hiking the loopin a ClockWise Direction, as when you are hiking back UP theother side of the loop, you have a beautiful view of the RoseRiver and Hogcamp Branch and the many, many cascades of waterover the rocks,as it distracts you from the long hike back up to the parking area. Literally about a mile along the water.
Excellent book by Kevin Adams describing the waterfalls of Virginia and West Virginia. I love the Shenandoah River Valley and go exploring there whenever possible. With the purchase of a new DSLR camera I was looking for a book describing the waterfalls in the region and how to get to them. Good maps and trailhead directions. The book divides the falls by region which helps me plan a trip so I can visit more than one or two waterfalls in one trip. The "At a glance" section the author includes for each waterfall has useful info describing accessibility, the river that the waterfall is on, landowner, to name a few. A real plus for me is the name of the USGS quad map the waterfall can be located on. The author also gives excellent tips and techniques for photographing waterfalls and backs it up with excellent photos (most in black and white) he took himself, my favorites being the waterfalls photographed in the winter. Thoroughly recommended.
This is my 2nd book by Kevin Adams. The trail locations and hiking descriptions are spot on. & being a photographer myself, his photo tips are a huge plus as they give you an idea, before you're there, of the type of lenses & photo gear to bring along.Don't just read this book! Get out there & USE this book (& his other book "North Carolina Waterfalls A Hiking & Photography Guide") to go & explore some of the most beautiful places around.
We have Kevin Adams' Waterfall guide to North Carolina and decided to pick up this one since we planned to travel through West Virginia and Virginia. Good decision. This book listed a bunch of waterfalls with pretty accurate descriptions of how to get there and what to expect.
My boyfriend is a "waterfall" buff and has been to every fall in NC..I gave him this book for Xmas and he loved it..It gave info on all the waterfalls in our area and the info on how to get to them..This was a great gift for him..I'd recommend this to anyone who loves the outdoors and loves to hike..Now we can explore the Virginia area this summer..He loved the book and I always go to Amazon for all my books anymore...They are great!!
good book on waterfalls but not as good as the North Carolina one. Perhaps because the falls are not as dynamic but I will see them within the next two years and find out for myself with my camera
I chose to give 4 stars, because it's the most detailed waterfall book out there.It covers the known and not so known waterfalls and more! The instruction are accurate.This book explains the history of the area of many falls. A very nice thing!The only thing I wish is that Kevin could have included an image of every falls explained/given directions to, if he has one.He should have an image at least to those falls that he gives photo ratings, but many falls described in the book has no image.Yet, I would recommend this book.
